Super Size This: Royal treatment for babies

Babies in Beijing come with an encourage: parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, and babysitters. This is my cousin Carson, son of my doctor cousin, Zhaojing. He has a live-in nanny and 2 grandmas who look after him Mon-Sat. He's only one and a half but he has already been put on a diet. He's obese for his age. He also started baby yoga and swimming classes, and his parents are already worried about which kindergarten to 'buy' him into. Oh, he started learning English as well.
Babies in Beijing are treated like royalty. Because parents feel that they were deprived as kids, they try to give their kids all that they didn't have. Understandable? Definitely. But this is to the extreme. The cost of having a live-in nanny alone (which is very common) is that of an individual's average salary. Thank goodness for dual incomes! The extra money comes in handy for brand name food, clothing and toys. If you ever want to have a baby in Beijing and keep up with the Changs, be prepared to support a little emperor!
