I guess you always want what you can't have. Since most Chinese skin can tan easily, bronze color is considered undesirable. My little cousin told me that she wanted to be as white as white people. Pale skin is also considered 'high class,' implying that you haven't had to work outside in the fields; instead, you probably stayed indoors all day sipping tea. How classy.
Because of this almost desperate desire to be fair-skinned, many US-based companies (such as Neutrogena) have created lines specifically for the Asian market that promise 'whitening' and 'tendering.'. Those are the two buzz words if you ever consider marketing beauty products in Asia. Conversely, Neutrogena's popular self-tanners and bronzing line would never be sold here.
